Finally, IT'S BRUCELLOSIS!!!

As Sherlock Holmes would say, "logical, my dear Watson..." This afternoon, after the longest interview we've had so far with any doctor here, the infectologist confirmed to us that what I have is Brucellosis, an infection caused by, who else? the Brusella bacteria.
As had previously mentioned, this bacteria lives in animals such as cows, goats, pigs and dogs. It is transmitted to humans via unpasteurized milk and cheeses.
Our doctor confirmed that at least two blood cultures have been positive, confirming without a doubt, the presence of the bacteria in my body.
We thought that once the diagnostic is confirmed, the doctor would prescribe a treatment, give us a few tips and send us home...not so easy...
She then explained that because this is such a rare infection in this country, the hospital has to send the blood cultures to a state lab so that they will certify that what I have is brucellosis. The state of Florida also has to recommend and approve the treatment for the infection.
So today we started a new round of tests to determine what organs this bacteria could have affected. We know it has touched the liver (I have to small cysts), one of my testicles and possibly my prostate. So far these effects are reversible and very minimal, but they don't want to leave any loose ends.
Tomorrow I will have two ultrasounds of my heart. The first one is very similar to the one I had done in El Salvador. If this is negative, they will do a more invasive one, they will insert a tube down my throat to insert the probe that will then be very close to the valves of my heart. So the fun continues...
Our doctor (infectologist) was so excited with my case because this infection is so rare in the US (less than 200 cases per year). She asked hundreds of questions and even requested my permission to present my case in medical conferences. She also congratulated us for the work of our Salvadorean infectologist, Dr. Ivan Solano Leiva. I signed a release for her to share information with him.
Treatment: high doses of various types of antibiotics. Some of them have to be administered by infectologists because they go in via IV. This can be done in Miami or El Salvador. But the process can take up to six weeks.
Luchy and I feel so relieved that we finally have arrived to the diagnostic we were looking for. But we are already looking forward to going back to Miami to spend the holidays with our sons and our friends.
Earlier in the morning we saw a dr. expert in pulmonary diseases. His exact words, "you are a textbook case of Brucellosis...You have so many of the symptoms, I have no doublt in my mind that this is what you have." He ordered a sleep disorder study because my slight overweight and my manly snoring don't allow me to have deep sleep. That can also cause many negative consequences for my health (and for Luchy's). By the way, tonight I have to sleep connected to a small machine that will measure oxygen flow and heart beat rate. I feel like the Six Million Dollar Man...
How do we feel? Relieved, happy, with a great weight off our shoulders, very grateful to God that it could be much worse and that He illuminated all the doctors to reach the same conclusion individually. We also feel concerned because there are so many people in our countries that consume unpasteurized milk and cheese. We're not sure we have the technology to identify this bacteria in people. We suspect that most people are treated more for the symptoms than for the bacteria itself. We really don't know how we can help. Luchy and I want to explore ways to help develop our medical technology in Latin America. We want to help others in some way.
Once again, thank you sooooo much for your prayers and words of encouragement. I think we have never felt so loved and cared for by so many people. To tell you the truth, it feels SO GOOD!!! We will never be able to repay this sacrifice of prayer and love for us. God will take care of adjusting these accounts...
